Retaining Employee Loyalty In Difficult Times – Transparency Helps

Your parent or your best friend probably advised you to work on your relationship when you had a fight with your girlfriend or your wife. Well, it is universal knowledge that adversities help the relationship grow. However, people often make the mistake of thinking that this rule does not apply to employer employee relationship.

Many people stick to a failed marriage for many reasons. People see no such compulsion as far as jobs are concerned. Quitting a job is not the same as getting a divorce. Yet, employees rarely, if ever, quit the company at the first sign of trouble. A good employer who has treated employees properly and has won their loyalty will retain their support even when times are tough.

On the other hand, an employer who has not bothered about maintaining employee relationships is going to suffer in the long run. Transparency is important if you want support of your employees. How would you feel if you were told that everything is hunky dory only to find that your firm is at the doorstep of bankruptcy? Would you still feel motivated to work towards overcoming the problem?

This can often lead to a difficult choice because showcasing your problems and adversities very early may lead to a sense of diffidence in your employees. People may start questioning your leadership skills and the bad word may spread in the market. You may need to be selective when disclosing certain problems faced by your organization to your most loyal employees.

Try to avoid a piecemeal approach. Work to a plan to retain employee support and confidence during adverse conditions. Proper use of your human resources can help you overcome the biggest difficulties.
